On February 7, 2013, friends and family gathered at Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute to make a surprise announcement honoring Russell C. Guerin, an Atrium Health executive and melanoma survivor. The occasion marked the establishment of the Russell C. Guerin Melanoma Research Fund at Levine Cancer Institute.
The Fund was established through generous gifts from Molly and Banks Bourne, Mandy and Todd Houser, and Sherrard and John Georgius, Jr. in honor of their good friend, Russell C. Guerin. It is dedicated to supporting clinical and scientific research in the Charlotte region targeted toward finding effective treatments for metastatic melanoma. One innovative treatment called immunotherapy involves using the body’s own defense system to recognize and destroy cancer cells. This method has produced several significant breakthroughs in the last several years.
Levine Cancer Institute is at the forefront of research targeted to better understand and enhance immunotherapy treatments for melanoma.
