The Shelton-Houser Endowed Chair for Cognitive Health

The vision of the Neurosciences program is rooted in multidisciplinary, patient-centered care, driven by the Shelton–Houser Endowed Chair for Cognitive Health.

In January of 2026, Dr. Mia Yang was named the inaugural Shelton–Houser Endowed Chair for Cognitive Health, marking a significant milestone in Alzheimer’s and dementia-related research, education, and clinical care. The Shelton–Houser Endowed Chair is based at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center, a hub for academic excellence and innovation, and is housed within the Department of Neurology at Atrium Health Neurosciences Institute – Charlotte in partnership with Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

In her role, Dr. Yang will lead the development of a multidisciplinary program focused on delivering high-quality, patient-centered cognitive care.

numerous opportunities exist to advance atrium health neurosciences institute

  • Endowed Professorships: As a means of prestige and recognition, endowed professorships support the holder’s efforts in research and/or special projects. These endowments provide sustained financial support for top medical experts to advance critical clinical research, recruit and train medical residents, and drive innovation.
  • Endowed chairs: Endowed Chairs offer a higher level of prestige and honor than a professorship with additional resources for research, programmatic, personnel and special project funding. An endowment provides sustained resources to drive innovation, expand access to care, and accelerate progress in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological/cognitive disorders.
  • Comprehensive Cognitive Center: Under the direction and leadership of the Shelton Endowed Chair for Cognitive Health, the comprehensive cognitive program will be launched in 2026. As the program and patient population grows, so do the needs of our clinical team overseeing their care.
  • Future Neuro Facilities: Neuroscience is one of three national service lines for the overall Advocate Health enterprise. As the hub for Advocate Health, and with new technology, therapies, and tools emerging from The Pearl, Neuroscience facilities will see expansions, renovations, and new facilities to bring the best care models and innovative therapies to our local market.
